In the beginning silk was reserved for royalties.
Year 2640 BC, the Chinese princess Xi Ling-Shi was sitting under a Mulberry tree and had her tea. A silk cocoon fell into her cup and it started to unfold itself in the tea. She tried to take it up and then she noticed the silk thread. The princess was so overwhelmed by the threads natural beauty that she asked her servants to collect hundreds of the cocoons in order to weave a fabric. This first fabric was made into clothes for the emperor.
Silk was since then loved by the royalties through the years to come. The knowledge of the life cycle of the silk worm (Bombyx Mori) was kept secret for 3000 years.
